At this point, after more than twenty years of recording and performing as a working trio, what else can be said about the music of Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette? All three were master musicians when they first got together, and the longevity and constancy of their association, unprecedented in jazz, has only deepened their individual talents and the empathy of their collective interaction.

Known colloquially as the "Standards Trio" due to their repertoire, the group prefers to avoid the nether regions which the individual members have all repeatedly visited in other settings, consistently producing thoughtful but sometimes startlingly original takes on classic jazz tunes with the odd original thrown in. So the release of The Out-of-Towners , a 2001 concert recorded at the State Opera of Munich, is almost certain to elicit a positive response, but perhaps not without a certain twinge of blasé familiarity. "Ho-hum," a niggling voice at the back of the mind yawns, "yet another display of the Jarrett trio's boundless eloquence."

Familiarity-bred contempt aside, "The Out-of-Towners" does document a corking good gig. Jarrett's intro to "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me" manages to be lovely and intriguing at the same time, and the group enters so smoothly that they seem to be extensions of the pianist's own fingers. "You've Changed" demonstrates how this group can take a standard and, without deconstructing it or losing the line of the original melody, open it up in a way that allows it to swell with new invention.

The title track, an obligatory Jarrett original, is a lengthy highlight here: a funky blues with gospel touches, it features some wonderful soloing by Peacock and is as deep-down as can be. Gerry Mulligan's "Five Brothers" swings as brightly as it should, with some effectively simple playing by Jarrett. An engaging run through Cole Porter's "I Love You" is let down only by a lengthy cymbals-only solo by DeJohnette that is strangely static and spoils the flow.

For anyone living under the proverbial rock who is unfamiliar with this trio, The Out-of-Towners makes as good an introduction as any of the group's recent work. We wanted to start this first issue of the year with a record that we liked in JAzzAct: « POUR EN FINIR AVEC 69 » de LA FRITURE MODERNE. Ce grand ensemble, composé des musiciens les plus créatifs de la scène toulousaine, est surnommée « Fanfare de Luxe », ce qui rappelle que la musique proposée par la friture moderne peut investir aussi bien la scène que la rue, avec une certaine force revendicatrice d’ailleurs...

Nous évoquons durant une grande partie de cette émission le label Ajmiséries, à l’occasion de la parution récente de trois de ces références. Le label AJMISERIES a été fondé par l’AJMI (l’Association pour le Jazz et Les Musiques Improvisées), une structure implantée en Avignon, qui depuis sa création en 1978 par Jean-Paul Ricard, met en œuvre toute l’année une politique forte en faveur du jazz et des musiques improvisées. L’AJMI multiplie ainsi les initiatives pour favoriser l’essor de ces musiques : Si elle est une scène des plus inspirées du paysage jazzistique français, elle mène aussi certaines actions pédagogiques et a créé parallèlement son propre label "Ajmiseries"...

I put like every week some new album in Jazz, Swing, Manouche Radio. This week I put Astrakan Cafe play by the Anouar Brahem Trio. I like a lot and I read a reviews by David Lynch I want to share with you :

Having already recorded a handful of accomplished albums for ECM, Thimar and Conte de L'Incroyable Amour being two standouts, Tunisian Anouar Brahem's latest release, Astrakan Cafe, may be the finest document of his formidable composing, performing, and bandleading gifts to date. Except for internationally known flute player Kudsi Erguner, the lineup for Astrakan Cafe is the same as the arcadian L'Incroyable Amour. Joining Brahem's earthy and emotive oud (lute) are Lassad Hosni, who plays the bendir and darbouka hand drums, and Turkish clarinetist Barbaros Erköse.

Like L'Incroyable Amour, the title track here is the album's crown jewel, a composition of deep, lasting melody. Brahem's cafe reference is not capricious, either; situated at the north end of the Caspian Sea, Astrakan is like Brahem's hometown of Tunis, a coastal city where cultures coalesce and people converse and trade ideas.

Much like a cafe. The exchange here is between three musicians and their instruments (no samples, digitizing, or synths), who interpret Middle Eastern, Balkan, and Mediterranean classics, as well as Brahem's impressionistic compositions. In spite of nearly two LPs' worth of material, these 14 songs compose a cohesive, yet kaleidoscopic work that's equally well suited to morning country rides and late night incensed wine affairs. Erköse glows on opener "Aube Rouge a Grozny," Hosni propels the frenetic and stunning "The Mozdok's Train," and "Karakoum" shows Brahem again to be an oudist of the first order. Together, Brahem and company have created one of the year's best worldy instrumental albums. Again.

Last album of Biscuit Kings

I just received the last CD "Hambones & Trombones" of the blues band Biscuit Kings. It's very good! I will put soon in JSM Radio inside the Blues Program everyday from 1 to 3 pm or 3 to 5 am Paris local time on Jazz Swing Manouche Radio.

Hambones & Trombones by the Biscuit Kings is a great collection of Americana Blues songs which seem to deal with the universal themes of love, death and the path to the Great Unkown. "The Day I Met My Waterloo", "Sweet Cheeks", "Mardi Gras Is Over" and the title song, have a definite New Orleans gumbo feel to them. Especially striking are two ballads; "Love Turns To Gold" which has a dark feel to it and the acoustic driven song, "God's Favorite Son", which strikes me as a great commentary on the current American mindset. All in all a highly listenable set!

Scott Joplin (c. 1867 – April 1, 1917) was an American composer and pianist. He achieved fame for his unique ragtime compositions, and was dubbed the "King of Ragtime." During his brief career, Joplin wrote 44 original ragtime pieces, one ragtime ballet, and two operas. One of his first pieces, the "Maple Leaf Rag", became ragtime's first and most influential hit, and has been recognized as the archetypal rag.

He was born into a musical African-American family of laborers in eastern Texas, and developed his musical knowledge with the help of local teachers. During the late 1880s he traveled around the American South as an itinerant musician, and went to Chicago for the World's Fair of 1893 which played a major part in making ragtime a national craze by 1897.

The Original Dixieland Jass Band (ODJB) was a New Orleans, Dixieland Jazz band that made the first jazz recordings early in 1917. Their "Livery Stable Blues" became the first jazz single issued. The group composed and made the first recordings of many jazz standards, the most famous being Tiger Rag. In late 1917 the spelling of the band's name was changed to Original Dixieland Jazz Band.

"Best of the Blue Note Years" by Michel Petrucciani.

French pianist Michel Petrucciani's combination of rhythmic energy and inspired invention is heard here in several settings recorded between the mid 1980s and early 1990s.

While Petrucciani can be an arresting interpreter of the standard repertoire, the emphasis here is on his original compositions, many making use of Latin rhythms and deceptively simple melodies. During this period, Petrucciani shifted his orientation from straight-ahead acoustic trios to use of electronic keyboards and additional percussion for a cooler, more layered approach. Listeners will likely make a rapid decision about which style they prefer, but what Petrucciani loses in drama with the expanded groups, he makes up in sustained and textured complexity. The highlight of the CD is the Caribbean-flavored "Bimini," heard in an extended performance from the 1986 Montreux festival with guitarist Jim Hall and Wayne Shorter on tenor. --Stuart Broomer

"You, Me & Char" by Imer Demirer

One of Turkey’s most important jazz musicians, Imer Demirer was introduced to the trumpet at the tender age of 12. Upon completion of a decade-long classical education for the trumpet at the Istanbul Conservatory, Imer Demirer quickly found work playing in a variety of important projects such as TRT Jazz Orchestra and the EBU Jazz Orchestra. A former member of the group Acid Trippin’, over the years Demirer has gained recognition for his talents as a musician from artists such as Lee Morgan and Woody Shaw and has played with notable names such as Ari Honig.

Recorded live in Italy, this program of invigorating music opens on its most sentimental and overwrought note with Thelonious Monk's "Ruby, My Dear. The lushness of Galliano's interpretation may sometimes feel a bit heavy-handed, and if it were placed further back in the program, it would sing a little more truthfully. He uses the accordion to sweep across the melody and works the standard in a number ways. And even if it does sound a bit affected, it orients the listener for an album that consistently outperforms any preconceived notions.

The radio program Jazzact exists since October 2000, you find her on every Wednesday from 9:10 pm till 10 pm on live in "Agora FM". The Rosenberg Trio “The Collection”

There is no precise date when the Rosenberg Trio actually started to be a trio. Being kids of a very musical family they grew up with the music of Django Reinhardt. In 1974 Hans Meelen met for the first time members of the Sinti-community. Stochelo was 6 years old at that time.Hans started to play in the churches with Sani Rosenberg (the father of Nous'che and Nonnie), Wasso Grünholz (grandfather of Stochelo) and Storo Berger on violin.

The Rosenberg Trio “The Collection”

The Rosenberg Trio are two guitarists and one bassist—Stochelo Rosenberg (soloist), Nous'che Rosenberg (rhythm guitar) and Nonnie Rosenberg (double bass) from The Netherlands. Their inspiration is Django Reinhardt, the legendary gypsy guitarist of the 1930s. The Rosenberg Trio's genre has been characterized as Jazz Manouche (Gypsy Swing).

Hermeto Pascoal (born June 22, 1936) is a Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist. He was born in Arapiraca, Alagoas, Brazil. Pascoal is a greatly beloved musical figure in the history of Brazilian music, known for his abilities at orchestration and improvisation as well as a record producer and contributor to many other Brazilian and international albums.

Like "mundo verde esperanca" (sometimes dated to 1989) this record draws influences from jazz, classical music and various south american styles.
The result is hard to define... fusion or avantgarde, who knows?
Extremely well arranged, cerebral music for the advanced listeners!

Stefano Battaglia Re: Pasolini 2CD

Relatively little-known outside of Europe, Stefano Battaglia is a brilliant pianist, who has collaborated extensively with Kenny Wheeler and Lee Konitz. He can play with a sweeping, even operatic lyricism or push the boundaries of improvisation.

This is his second two-CD set for ECM and it will undoubtedly expand his audience at the same time that it places special demands on the listener. It's an extended portrait of the filmmaker, poet and political activist Pier Paolo Pasolini, with individual pieces scored to portray his featured actresses, like Laura Betti and Maria Callas, or give musical form to many of his works, whether film, poem or even essay. Disc One emphasizes Battaglia's pensive lyricism, whether minimalist or dissonant, and it's here given extraordinary depth and welling power by a sextet that includes trumpeter Michael Gassmann. Disc Two is far darker, with Battaglia and a string-rich French quintet playing chopping, slashing music that can summon up Pasolini's revolutionary and religious passions (and his grim unsolved murder) in a musical language that takes improvisation into the abstract, serial language of Alban Berg's Lulu or Schoenberg's piano music.

Joe Lovano "I'M ALL FOR YOU"

Joe Lovano's big-toned tenor saxophone (think John Coltrane in the '50s, or Sonny Rollins, as reference points) has graced many diverse jazz contexts. From soul-jazz (Lonnie Smith) to straight-ahead big band (Woody Herman, Mel Lewis) to freer, edgier situations (Paul Motian), the adaptable Lovano has excelled in all these while remaining true to himself. In his career as a leader, Lovano rarely repeats himself: he's recorded unique tribute albums to inspirations as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Enrico Caruso, and Tadd Dameron.

With I'M ALL FOR YOU--which could be subtitled "Lovano Plays For Lovers"--Lovano takes it easy, after a fashion. Burhan Öçal & Jamaaladeen Tacuma - Groove Alla Turca (Featuring Natacha Atlas)

"Groove Alla Turca" is a project that brings together two worlds apart; the world of Burhan Öçal, who grew up playing traditional rhythms of Turkey, with that of Jamaaledeen Tacuma, a world of jazz, blues, funk and soul. This is a meeting of percussion and bass, rhythm and groove, of traditional players on kanun, oud and clarinet, darbuka and violin. Jamaaladeen Tacuma is joined by some of the finest musicians from New York and Philadelphia, Jack Walrath, a long time associate of Mingus, is the trompet in the horn section. Art Baron and Ben Schachter complete the front-line on the trombone and tenor, Daryl Burge and Rick Iannacone, both from Phili, are the force behind, on the drums and the guitar. It was a destiny to have Natacha Atlas on four tracks, as she happened to be in town during the recording sessions. Her presence seems all planned as her Arabic vocals flow wih the groove. The result is a funky sound with many colors, a big sound with many details. This is jazz, funk, ethnic, tradition. This is groove in a Turkish way.

Jorge Pardo y Chano Dominguez, « 10 de Paco », (Nuevos Medios, 1995)

People might not expect flamenco on an album featuring piano, soprano and tenor sax, flute and double bass. 10 de Paco, an album featuring 10 well-known songs composed by Paco de Lucia, has no Spanish guitar on any of its tracks. Still, this recording by Jorge Pardo and Chano Dominguez is one of the most flamenco-oriented albums I've ever had the chance to listen to.
Of course, there is more than flamenco to it, taking into account who is involved in the project. There's jazz, or let's say flamenco-jazz (that thing that Pedro Iturralde started as a very experimental jam-session).

There's improvisation, there's some type of "classical" style at particular moments in the way that Chano develops and harmonizes the melodies and in his interpretation, and there is a bunch of unusual development on the percussion side of things.
This is a highly recommended album from all points of view.

On Sunday, in “New song, New bit on JSM”, I suggest you leaving at the border of the Mediterranean Sea with two albums from Spain and Italy. All these songs are added to the program “Mediterranean jazz” which you find on Wednesday from 3 pm till 5 pm and on Fridays from 5 pm till 7 pm.

Carlos Pinana-Juan Cortes-Guillermo McGill - "Flamenco Jazz" 2 cd

This anthology shows how pianist Chano Dominguez confronts pieces signed by Thelonious Monk. A double CD set produced by Fernando Rosado for Nuba Records, to discover the Flamenco jazz. Guitarist Paco de Lucía believes that flamenco can absorb befitting influences. Flamenco jazz is therefore quite in keeping providing that the genre’s roots and general objectivity are well-dosed.

Italian Instabile Orchestra - "Skies of Europe"

For its second release, this fascinating ensemble chose to record two extended suites by band members Bruno Tommaso and Giorgio Gaslini. Tommaso's "Il Maestro Muratore" (The Master Mason), inspired by the Sardinian sculptor Constantino Nivola, begins superbly with a spirited romp based on a Sardinian folk dance and featuring high-wire soloing by trumpeter (and founder) Pino Minafra and Carlo Actis Dato on bass clarinet. The remainder of the piece meanders a bit, genre-hopping in postmodern fashion but doing so with perhaps less grace than one would wish.

The suite ends with a reprise of the opening theme, and one only wishes the same verve and vigor could have been sustained throughout the composition. Gaslini's title piece is similarly wide ranging, though with a early 20th century European cosmopolitan feel befitting several of its dedicatees from art, music, and film. While the thematic material might have echoes of parlor music and cabarets, the solos are firmly in the avant-garde tradition, forming a counterpoint that is initially beguiling but grows a bit thin with repetition. Still, there are jewels within, such as the lovely miniature tribute, "Satie Satin," and the closing homage to Fellini with its luxuriant nods to Nino Rota. At this point in the Italian Instabile Orchestra's journey, the listener still has the impression that the best of this band had not yet been captured on disc, but there are enough high points herein to make it well worth a listen.

On Saturday, February 20 at 5 pm (Paris Local Time), it is the first time of this new programme on Jazz, Swing, Manouche Radio. Seb our DJ Roger for one nigth prepared you a jazz mixture completely Hot, Funky and Swing.

Look this list of more or less famous names, more or less jazz singer but always well! We begin this musical adventure of two hours with Boby Lapointe (old french singer) big artist jazz as each knows, he will try to play Gypsy violin. And the most funning it's this end with the Muppet Show theme. It is clear that all good amateurs of Jazz will be to the appointment fixed by Seb.

But don't affraid, we also find more traditional artists as Miles Davis, Texier, Romano, Charlie Parker or Django Reinhardt. There are original songs like this gipsy jazz version of the song of Serge Gainsbourg "le poinçonneur des Lilas", or this live version of "Cameleon" with Herbie Hancock's and Jaco Pastorius.
